Polling Day

Thursday, 12 November 2009

I'm off to Springburn now for a long day as the good people of Glasgow North East go to the polls.

Conventional wisdom is that you talk down your chances on polling day so that if you lose it is expected and if you win it's a shock victory.

And needless to say the SNP have been playing down expectations which perhaps says more for their own confidence and it's been interesting that commenter's here have been speaking a lot about how big the Labour majority is although I don't remember this being mentioned in Glasgow East - it was all about a 'political earthquake' then.

I've been quite open about the fact that I'm confident that Labour will win and I'm not going to indulge in the spin game of dampening down expectations. I think we have the best candidate with a good grassroots campaign which is really connecting with people even if people are starting to get annoyed by the endless canvassers on their doors.

But you can never pre-judge the electorate and ultimately they will make up their mind and I have complete faith in their judgement. If there was a mandatory vote I'm sure we would walk it but the challenge is to make sure we get our vote out.

Plus, you've got your tremendous record of achievements in Glasgow North East - recorded here by Islay McLeod for posterity.

Yes, the people of Glasgow North East, need only look to Baron Martin's £400k villa and say to themselves - "We did that for him and we can help keep the wolf from Willie Bain's door too."

After all, it's not a case of what the MP can do for you, but what you can do for your MP in these Labour strongholds.

I'm sure the people of Springburn will rest easier in their slums knowing that Labour will invest £100bn in their security with the Trident renewal, keeping 1000 people in Helensburgh happy.

The rising minimum wage will really help too, when any actual jobs start appearing on the horizon for them.

Yep, there's a lot to be positive about Yousuf, especially as you nailed that David Kerr for actually being from Cumbernauld.

This was always an easy Labour win. Which makes their decision to fight it in a dirty fashion all the more incomprehensible.

In future they should label all their correspondence clearly. They should be called Labour News or the like, not Local News or Re-Gen and masquerading as impartial editorial.

Also amazed to read Willie Bain is not a politician. Wonder if Michael Martin knew this when he appointed him his election agent. I guess we're stuck with this slippery Napoleon for the duration now.
